Summer Reading

Libraries Rock: Summer Reading 2018

This year's edition of our annual summer reading program has begun! Register online or in person at any of our branch libraries between now and July 18.

We offer three reading programs for youth from birth to grade 12: Baby Bookworms, Kids Read, and Teens Read. Kids and teens win prizes as they track the number of days they read at least 20 minutes, while babies do early literacy activities.

Did you know students can lose 2 months of reading achievement in the summer if they don't keep their mind sharp? Help us build a better world of strong readers by encouraging your child to read regularly through the school break!

Family Registration

If you are registering more than one child in a summer reading program, create a family administrator account for yourself to keep track of them all in one place!

Baby Bookworms

Birth through age 2

You and your little one will get an early learning activity log with fun ideas for talking, singing, reading, and playing.

Possible activities include reading a story about a famous musician, counting cars with your child as you drive, and talking about the various sounds you hear throughout the day.

These fun activities emphasize skills you can help your child develop before learning to read.

Complete 15 activities from the provided list to earn prizes:

  • A board book
  • A bath toy

Kids Read

Ages 3 through 5th grade

To participate, read at least 20 minutes a day. You can track your progress online or with a reading log available at any Wichita Public Library.

You can count anything you read to yourself or to someone else, or that someone reads to you.

For every 10 days you read 20 minutes or more, you earn a prize such as:

  • Coupons for free food and entertainment
  • A free book
  • Entries for the grand prize drawing
  • Your name inside a library book of your choice

Teens Read

Students entering grades 6-12

You can count any reading you do, whether it's in a book, a newspaper, on a website, or in a magazine!

For every 10 days you read 20 minutes or more, you earn a prize such as:

  • Coupons for free food and entertainment

Summer Teen Volunteers

The Library's summer reading program would not be possible without the help of dedicated teen volunteers! Applications are being accepted for the teen volunteer program.
