Interlibrary Loan

Can't find it in our catalog? You can use our Interlibrary Loan service to try to borrow the title from a different library system.

  • Requests can be made online through our online catalog. Simply search for the item you want, then click on the Use Interlibrary Loan button to start the process.
  • If you cannot find the title you need using the catalog, you can submit a request using our Interlibrary Loan form.
  • There is a $3 fee for each filled interlibrary loan request to help cover the cost of delivering items from other library systems. If we are not able to borrow the item, there will be no charge. We will contact you if a lending library charges additional fees. Some materials may be excluded from the $3 fee.

  • The interlibrary loan borrowing fee is not charged to customers in the following situations:

    1. When a title is owned by the Wichita Public Library but the item is needed in a different format in order to make the information accessible to the customer (e.g. a print copy of an audio book for a customer with hearing impairments, a larger print/audio edition of a copy available only in regular print for a low vision customer, etc.)
    2. When the last copy of a title owned by the Wichita Public Library is not currently available as a result of being missing, lost in circulation or unavailable for repair/rebinding/replacement.
    3. When additional copies of a title are needed for a book club or organization with a current partnership agreement on file with the Library.
  • You are allowed three active interlibrary loan requests.

Loan periods are determined by the lending library so they will vary.

Interlibrary loan requests cannot be renewed. If you need more time, ask staff about requesting a second copy of the title.

  • Titles not owned by Wichita Public Library or titles owned by the Wichita Public Library that are lost, missing, or overdue by more than 2 weeks may be requested through interlibrary loan.

You can use the Library's online catalog to search for and request most items. The best way to request a newspaper or magazine article, microfilm, or a specific volume of a multi-part or multi-year publication is to complete an Interlibrary Loan form.

    Interlibrary loan is excellent for:

    • Articles and books from academic or specialty publishers
    • Older titles and formats, such as VHS or audio cassettes
    • Recent or popular titles not on current bestseller lists
    • Documentary films

More competition exists for the following and it becomes more difficult to obtain:

    • Television shows
    • All forms of popular music
    • Movies on Blu-ray
    • Books on CD or Playaways
    • New releases in movies, music and books
    • Current bestsellers
  • Most requests are filled in 2-4 weeks, depending on whether the item is immediately available from the lending library. You will be notified as soon as the item arrives or if we are unable to locate a lending library.

  • Contact the Central Library's Circulation staff at (316) 261-8508 if you need to cancel an interlibrary loan request.

  • Overdue fees are $1 per day per item with a maximum fee of $30.

Contact Library staff if your interlibrary loan item is lost or damaged. The lending library will provide the replacement fee for the item. All lost or damaged interlibrary loan orders are assessed an additional $25 processing fee.
