In 2016, the Library benefited from 382 individuals contributing 23,432 hours of service, the equivalent of 11 full-time positions!

Using the Independent Sector's value of volunteer service for Kansas, these volunteers provided $515,972.64 in service value to our library. This makes a huge impact on the quality of service the Library is able to provide!

Available Opportunities

    • Job Purpose: This is clerical work which will assist library in scanning paper registration forms into the Laserfiche scanning software.

      Duties and Responsibilities:
      Note: Volunteer will be trained to use Laserfiche software.

      • Scans documents into Laserfiche software
      • Enters customer information into Laserfiche software
      • Searches in Laserfiche software for scanned files


      • Skills: organizational, detail-oriented
      • Ability to use a computer to access, interpret, and record information
      • Ability to scan written forms quickly and accurately for errors
      • Ability to accurately record and file information
      • Ability to learn, within a reasonable period of time, applicable procedures
      • Ability to follow oral and written instructions
      • Ability to write legibly
      • Ability to develop and maintain effective working relationships with associates
      • Ability to communicate clearly and effectively, both orally and in writing
      • Ability to deal tactfully and courteously with other
      • Ability to learn, within a short period of time

      Hours: Multiple options. Precise schedule to be determined by the supervisor in coordination with the applicant.

    • Job Purpose: Answer general questions (will receive training)
      Hours: 10 a.m. – 1 p.m. or 1 – 4 p.m. (shorter shift may be available)

    • Job Purpose: Help with pulling holds
      Hours: Mondays and Fridays, 8:30 – 10 a.m.

    • Job Purpose: Volunteer will unpack incoming mail and separate the mail into two stacks:

      1. For items being returned to Wichita Public Library (WPL),
      2. Items received which fill request from WPL customers.

      The position will also be responsible for packing library material for shipment through U.S. Mail.

      Duties and Responsibilities:

      • Opens and sorts arriving mail onto two carts
      • Attaches identification labels to items borrowed from other libraries
      • Labels, sorts and sends out mail; places material in envelops or packages


      • Equivalent combination of experience and training may be considered.

      • Ability to package material neatly
      • Ability to deal tactfully and courteously with others
      • Ability to learn, within a short period of time
      • Ability to write legibly
      • Ability to communicate clearly and effectively, both orally and in writing

      Hours: Monday - Friday, 10 a.m. - Noon

    • Job Purpose: The volunteer will be responsible for working with any variation of work assignments. The job exists to accomplish tasks that are repetitive and can be done by staff that are not skilled catalogers. The work is extremely important but does not vary much and is very sedentary.

      Duties and Responsibilities:

      • Works with transfers; affixing new labels to transferred books.
      • Places barcodes on gift books.
      • Unloads the discard boxes, cross through barcodes, and stamp the items "No longer property of the Wichita Public Library" with the appropriate stamp.
      • Sorts the extension cards.
      • Processes DVDs and Blu-rays. Must be able to write neatly and clearly.
      • Removes cellophane from new DVDs and Blu-rays.
      • Cleans DVD, BluRay, and compact discs; matching them back to the appropriate container.


      • Education: High school
      • Skills: Skilled at using scissors, tape, glue gun, and write neatly.
      • Abilities: Ability to follow directions, work independently, and work very quietly.
      • Other characteristics such as personal characteristics: Clean, neat, and keep a tidy work area.

      Hours: Monday - Friday, between the hours of 8 a.m. - 4 p.m. Approximately four to eight hours per week of volunteer work. The schedule can be set with the understanding that if we are having a slow week we will call in advance and let the person know we do not need their services that week.

    • Job Purpose: The outreach assistant’s job is to assist the outreach librarian with programs conducted in the community, primarily with children ages 2-12 years. While some job duties are consistent throughout the year, seasonal projects typically determine the duties that need to be done. Most assistants will be working under the direct guidance of the outreach librarian. Assistants with sufficient experience, education, skill, and confidence may conduct programs independently.

      Duties and Responsibilities:

      • In the summer, most outreach is focused on school age children attending camps or child care programs, such as those operated by the City of Wichita Parks and Recreation Department and the Wichita Public Schools. Duties include:
        • Signing children up for the summer reading program at their location, such as camp or child care
        • Returning to check reading records and award prizes
        • Conducting activities at area camps and child care programs that are developmentally appropriate, hands-on experiences, based on a book or the summer reading theme 
        • Promoting the library anywhere families and children gather, such as the sites that offer free lunch in the summer.
      • During the school year, most outreach is focused on children ages 2-6 years.
        • Checking out age-appropriate books for outreach patrons, based on their requested themes, titles, or authors.
        • Delivering, picking up, and checking in books from outreach patrons.
        • Conducting interactive and engaging preschool Storytime
      • Seasonal projects, such as:
        • Young Artists’ Exhibit in April
        • Summer Reading Promotion in late April and early May
        • Kansas Reads to Preschoolers Week in November
        • Special project work as needed

      Skills/Abilities Needed: The assistant needs to have a reliable source of transportation, and be able to adapt to various work environments. The environment is typically full of active and talkative children, sometimes up to 50 participants in the program. The assistant needs to be a quick learner that can take direction well, and be extremely flexible. He/she needs to be able to warmly and confidently lead, guide, support, and engage groups of children of varying ages.

      Hours: Hours vary depending on the duties performed. Most hours will fall between 9 a.m. and 4 p.m., Monday through Friday. Help is needed on Monday afternoons in the summer with the school age camps. Preschool Storytimes are usually in the mornings. Books for outreach patrons can be pulled and returned at any time.

    • Job Purpose: This position assists with unpacking, sorting, and processing items from deliveries.

      Duties and Responsibilities:

      • Unpack boxes from delivery.
      • Sort boxes onto carts according to items requested and items returned.
      • Scan requested items and put printed sticky label on item.
      • Shelve requested items in proper place according to guidelines.
      • Scan returned items to make them available at Comotara.
      • Place returned items on a cart to be shelved.


      • Basic alphabetical skills
      • Basic computer skills
      • Be able to push cart weighing approx. 50+ lbs.
      • Be able to bend/squat to pick up and put down items weighing 5 lbs.
      • Identify items or situation not within normal operating perimeters
      • Make critical decision when an abnormal situation arises.
      • Be able to realize their knowledge limitations and ask questions.

      Hours: Tuesday, 9:30 a.m. - Noon. Can work one or more days according to availability.

    • Job Purpose: Storytime assistants directly assist the Youth Services Librarian during Preschool Storytimes, helping children be comfortable and well behaved during the program.

      Duties and Responsibilities: Storytime Aides focus on directly assisting the Youth Services Librarian. They:

      • Assist librarian in set-up and tear-down of space for storytime presentations,
      • Monitor children during storytimes and assist those in distress,
      • Gather storytime attendance statistics,
      • Assist librarians in special projects as needed, such as labeling items or creating storytime aids.
      • Perform other tasks as needed.


      • Students aged 12+ or adults of any age
      • Ability to commit to a regular schedule
      • Enthusiastic attitude and willingness to learn new tasks
      • Professional demeanor
      • Experience with supervising small children preferable

      Hours: Tuesday mornings, 10:15 to 11:15, coinciding with fall and spring storytime seasons. Fall semester runs September to November. Spring season will open mid-January and end in April. Storytime Aides have the summer off and may resume again in the Fall.

    • Duties and Responsibilities: The duties include counting money and working the desk for a 3-4 hour shift. The volunteer is responsible for helping the public when they are paying for their items. The volunteer is mainly sitting for the shift. The volunteers also help out by straightening the shelves.
      Hours: Monday 10:30 a.m. - 7:30 p.m., Tuesday - Saturday 10:30 a.m. - 5 p.m.
      Skills: Need to be able to handle and count money, and handle books.

    • Duties and Responsibilities: The duties are the same for the Desk Worker but instead of a regular schedule substitutes are called on an on-call basis. If a permanent volunteer is absent for any reason a substitute is called in. You can decline when called if you are unable to help on the day and time you are called.
      Hours: Monday 10:30 a.m. - 7:30 p.m., Tuesday - Saturday 10:30 a.m. - 5 p.m.
      Skills: Need to be able to handle and count money, and handle books.

    • The Friends hold special sales throughout the year. Responsibilities may include helping customers, sorting and stacking books, and event set up and tear down.
