COVID-19 Update

Updated May 21, 2020:

Beginning Tuesday, May 26, Wichita Public Library locations will reopen with limited in-person services. The Library is following guidance from the City, County, State and the Centers for Disease Control & Prevention regarding best safety practices for customers and staff.

NOTE: The following information pertains to all Wichita Public Library locations except for the Linwood Park Branch. The Linwood Park Branch, located inside the Linwood Recreation Center, will remain closed to the public but will continue offering curbside pickup service for materials.

The first hour of operation Monday-Saturday at each location will be reserved for vulnerable populations. This includes seniors, pregnant women, individuals with compromised immune systems and other at-risk populations.

The following services will be offered during this time:

  • Holds pickup (curbside, drive-up window, and inside Library locations with staff assistance)
  • Public computing and Wi-Fi access with limited seating capacity
  • Print, copy and fax services
  • Book a Librarian technology help by appointment only at the Advanced Learning Library

Safety Protocols

To provide safe interactions, the following safety protocols will be enforced:

  • Customers and staff are required to wear a cloth face covering. Cloth face coverings should not be placed on young children under age 2, anyone who has trouble breathing, or is unable to remove the mask without assistance.
  • Floor markers are placed at high traffic areas inside Library locations for reference.
  • Building capacity limits for each location will be reduced to reflect social distancing guidelines within the limited areas open for public use.

Limited Access

Parts of each Library location will be blocked from public use at this time:

  • Customers will not be able to browse materials. Library staff will provide a concierge service to retrieve materials for customers.
  • The Research Pavilion at the Advanced Learning Library will be closed.
  • Children's areas at all locations will be closed.
  • Collaboration rooms will be taken out of service.
  • Furniture will be rearranged or removed to encourage social distancing and mitigate gatherings.

Other Information

Other important information regarding the Library's reopening:

  • In-person programs, events and room rentals will not take place until a later date.
  • The Library will not accept materials donations during this time.
  • The Friends of the Wichita Public Library used bookstore, located inside the Advanced Learning Library, will be closed until a later date.

Placing Holds

If you would like to check items out, you can place them on hold through the online catalog. You can also call (316) 261-8500 during regular business hours for staff assistance. Notifications will be sent once your holds are available for pickup. Hold fees will be waived for items picked up by May 23.

Picking Up Holds

Curbside service is offered at the Angelou Northeast, Evergreen, Linwood, Rockwell, and Westlink branch libraries. Drive-up windows are located at the Advanced Learning Library and the Alford branch.

  • After you receive a notification that your hold is ready, go to the designated Library location to pick up materials
  • When you arrive at the location, proceed to the drive-up window or park and call the number on the outdoor signs to check in with Library staff
  • Library staff will ask for your name and library card number to verify materials
  • Staff will hand materials in a plastic bag to you through the drive-up window or deliver the materials to your vehicle

Returning Checked Out Items

Items checked out prior to March 17 are now due on June 1. Please use materials drops for items being returned to the Library. Employees will not accept in-person returns at this time. Materials may remain on your account up to four days after returning them for safe handling. No additional fees will be accrued.
