Hello and welcome to our Learning Circle for Fiction Writing for Teens! You should be a teen ages 12-18 and wanting to learn more about writing fiction. Perhaps you've already written your own novel, or maybe you're a beginner tackling your first short story. All are welcome! You should also be willing to share your writing experiences, tips for other writers, and maybe even your writing work – but you won't be required to share your writing in this class if you don't want to. You should be willing to use both your camera and microphone in this virtual classroom.
Haven't signed up yet? Remember to go to
p2pu.org/wichita and register for the Learning Circle ahead of the start date on Wednesday, September 29!
Learning Circles are lightly facilitated study groups for learners who want to take online courses together. This course has been created using material from the RL Stine Writing Program and the National Novel Writing Month Young Writer's Program curriculum.
Learning Circles use a "flipped classroom" model in which we will ask you to read through the week's materials in advance of the weekly meeting. For instance, you should already be familiar with the website content of Week One by the time you attend the first meeting of the Learning Circle. This allows us to spend the classroom time on discussion, more advanced concepts and sharing our work with each other.
You will want to begin by downloading these guides for reference. We will refer to the page numbers in the guides throughout this Learning Circle:
Each week, you'll have some reading assignments from the guides and videos to watch before you join us for our meeting on Wednesdays. Then, we'll talk about what we've learned, go over some new material together, and have the chance to do some writing exercises in class.
By the end of this Learning Circle course, you will be prepared to start a National Novel Writing Month challenge in November 2021 or tackle your own writing challenge. You can also join our local National Novel Writing Month chapter for their kickoff party at the library and online by registering for the
NaNoWriMo Prep Rally event.
